With another haunting release from his ambitious ‘Genesis’ album, which he wrote, recorded, and produced, Minneapolis artist Mychael Gabriel presents ‘Sunday Afternoon’.
It would be easy to compare Mychael Gabriel to Prince even if it wasn’t for his incredible connections to the artist; not just the fact they come from the same city, but also the fact that his parents worked with both Prince and his frequent collaborator, Sheila E, and in fact Mychael himself is these days Sheila E’s co-producer, but he has in recent years moved to the other side of the mixing desk.
He does bear an uncanny likeness to the Purple One, both physically and vocally, and his ability to bend genres and guitar strings is quite incredible as well.
But Mychael Gabriel is his own person, and he shows this in the sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes tender ‘Sunday Afternoon’, which sees him navigate the highs and lows of a relationship, by way of lyrics that seamlessly convey the pleasure and pain.
The music video for ‘Sunday Afternoon’ gives Mychael yet another opportunity to flex his talents, this time for direction. We see him walking in the autumnal beauty of Minnesota’s late region, where he encounters a strangely veiled woman. Her striking red outfit, juxtaposed against the golden spires of woodland trees, is joined by other symbols of love, red balloons, a red rose; even Mychael’s crimson velvet blazer adds to the vibe of love and heartbreak. It’s a gloriously moving clip that will leave you feeling a bit despondent, perhaps slightly bereft; and if that’s the case, then Mychael Gabriel will have done his job.
