Whenever an artist scores a top spot in my year-end countdowns, my ears are wide open for their follow-up. More often than not, I’m underwhelmed. That’s just the way these things go. Alice’s Dance On is a difficult track to improve upon, and Show Down doesn’t come close. But, it still retains the group’s upbeat dance sound in a fun way.
Apart from an ill-advised slowdown during the post-chorus breakdowns, Show Down keeps its tempo brisk and exciting. In this way, it reminds me of Brave Girls’ Chi Mat Ba Ram. The percolating synths that drive the track are satisfying and beg for a more thrilling set of melodies. Show Down‘s chorus is a bunt when it could have been a home run, and this lack of ambition lessens its overall effect. It’ll make a nice companion to Dance On, but it’s definitely the lesser of the two tracks.
