Out today, Dive (Come Afloat)’ is Montauk Hotel’s first release since 2019, and follows on from their early success, which saw them establish themselves as among Ireland’s rising artists.
Fans of Montauk Hotel will already be familiar with the band’s shimmering, 80s Indie pop sound, and will certainly welcome the more mature take of ‘Dive (Come Afloat)’. The song will definitely win over some new listeners as well, as it reflects on the uncertain border that separates present from future, hesitation from releases, uneasiness from comfort and deceit from honesty.
Amid an instrumental comprising strident drums and jangly guitars, ‘Dive (Come Afloat’ examines friendship, insecurity and feelings of homecoming in a motionless town.
Montauk Hotel takes their influence from the glory days of early 80s indie-pop, in a fusion of strong melodies, sparkling guitars, and punchy beats, bringing them all together in a gorgeous fusion all of their own.
Having said that, if you’re a fan of Irish female-led bands (The Cranberries, B*Witched, Soda Blonde), or 80s pop/rock (The Bangles and The Go-Gos come to mind) then you will be very much drawn to the sound of Montauk Hotel. And even if that sort of music isn’t your vibe, you’ll still get something out of ‘Dive (Come Afloat)’.
Montauk Hotel look forward to returning to the live music scene after making an impressive impact since 2016 with headline shows including Whelans, The Workman’s Club, The Sound House, Bello Bar and Roisin Dubh, as well as supporting international acts such as Goat Girl, PINS and Beauty Sleep.
Montauk Hotel have appeared at festivals such as Electric Picnic, Other Voices, Groove Festival, Sea Sessions, Vantastival and Sunflower Festival.
Montauk Hotel released their self-titled EP in March 2017 with a sold out show at Whelans. Their 2019 singles ‘Stains’, and ‘White Billboards’, were playlisted on Spotify New Music Friday, and received support from Nialler9, RTE, 2fm, The Thin Air, The Last Mixed Tape and BBC Radio.
